At Primary Health Care, we understand that taking the first step towards addressing your mental health can be challenging. That’s why we’re here to guide you through the process of establishing behavioral health care with us. Our team, with clinics in Ames, Des Moines, and Marshalltown, is dedicated to providing you with the support you need—whether you’re seeking help for the first time or continuing your journey with mental health care. And remember, we accept Medicaid!
The First Step: Meeting with a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC)
When you’re referred for therapy, your journey typically begins with a meeting with one of our Behavioral Health Consultants (BHC). This initial meeting is an important step, as it helps us understand your needs and determine the best course of action for your care. This usually occur when you are in the clinic for a medical visit and your provider had discussed this referral with you.
- Assessment and Planning: During your first appointment, the BHC will discuss your concerns, goals, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. They will also assess your readiness for therapy, ensuring that the timing is right for you to begin treatment.
- Brief Intervention: If there’s a wait for a therapist, the BHC may provide brief intervention strategies to support you in the meantime. This can include coping techniques, stress management, and other tools to help bridge the gap until your therapy begins.
Understanding the Waitlist
Due to high demand for mental health services, there may be a waitlist for therapy appointments. We know this can be frustrating, but we want you to know that we’re doing everything we can to get you the care you need as quickly as possible.
- Why the Waitlist? Therapists at Primary Health Care have a limited number of patients on their schedules to ensure each person receives the attention and care they deserve. Unfortunately, this can lead to longer wait times, especially when patients don’t show up for their scheduled appointments.
- Staying Connected: While you’re on the waitlist, our team will stay in touch with you. If a slot opens up due to a patient completing treatment or no longer needing care, we’ll reach out to offer you that appointment.
Your First Therapy Appointment
When a therapy slot becomes available, you’ll be contacted by your therapist to schedule your first session. This appointment is a crucial step in your mental health journey, and we want to make sure you’re fully prepared.
- What to Expect: Your first therapy session will involve getting to know your therapist and discussing your mental health history and goals for treatment. This is a time to ask questions and share any concerns you might have.
- Regular Sessions: Once therapy begins, you’ll work together with your therapist to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Consistency is key, so we encourage you to attend all scheduled sessions to get the most out of your therapy.
Addressing No-Shows
We understand that life can be unpredictable, and there may be times when you can’t make it to your appointment. However, missed appointments can disrupt your progress and make it harder for others to access care.
- Communication is Key: If you know you won’t be able to attend an appointment, please let us know as soon as possible. This allows us to offer the slot to someone else who may be waiting for care.
- Importance of Commitment: Consistently attending your therapy sessions is important for your mental health journey. If you’re having trouble staying committed, talk to your therapist—they’re here to help you navigate any challenges.
