Do your teeth hurt when you drink something hot or eat something cold? You’re not alone. Tooth sensitivity is very common, especially as we get older. The good news? There are simple ways to manage it — and Primary Health Care (PHC) is here to help.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
Your teeth are covered in a hard outer layer called enamel. It protects the inside of your teeth, where the nerves live. But over time, enamel can wear down. When that happens, hot or cold food and drinks can hit the nerves and cause pain.
- Here are a few common reasons your teeth might be more sensitive as you age:
- Enamel wears down over the years, especially if you brush too hard, eat a lot of acidic foods (like tomatoes or oranges), or grind your teeth.
- Gums pull away from the teeth. This is called receding gums, and it can make the roots of your teeth more exposed and sensitive.
- Dry mouth can make things worse. Many older adults get dry mouth from certain medications or health problems. Saliva helps protect your teeth, so when there’s less of it, your teeth are more at risk for cavities and sensitivity.
Ways to Help at Home
Even though enamel doesn’t grow back, there are simple ways to protect your teeth and feel better:
🪥 Switch your toothbrush – Use a soft or extra-soft brush to avoid scrubbing too hard.
🦷 Use the right toothpaste – Try one made for sensitive teeth. Ask your dentist for suggestions.
🥤 Cut back on acidic foods and drinks – Like soda, tea, tomatoes, and citrus fruits.
🚰 Drink plenty of water – This helps prevent dry mouth and keeps your mouth clean.
🧼 Brush and floss every day – Good dental hygiene helps stop problems before they start.
When to See the Dentist
If your tooth pain doesn’t go away or keeps getting worse, it’s time to see a dentist. You might have a cavity, gum disease, or another issue that needs treatment. The earlier you catch it, the easier (and cheaper) it is to fix.
